Bangladesh to buy 11 more Boeing jets, taking Biman order to 25

Bangladesh will purchase 11 more aircraft from Boeing, officials said, raising national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines' planned order to 25 jets as Dhaka works to strengthen trade ties with Washington.

The agreement was due to be signed in New York, and forms part of Bangladesh's push to increase imports from the United States. Dhaka is seeking to ease pressure from a trade imbalance of roughly $6 billion and to lower the risk of tariff increases that could weigh on its export-driven economy, especially the garment sector.

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, confirmed the Boeing purchase in a Facebook post, describing it as another "win-win" for US-Bangladesh relations.

Biman is in the middle of renewing its fleet, with the aim of expanding capacity and improving connectivity.

The fresh order builds on a $3.7 billion deal signed in April for 14 Boeing aircraft, including 10 Dreamliners and four 737 MAX 8 jets, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2035.

European rival Airbus remains in contention. A government-appointed technical committee is reviewing a proposal to acquire 10 aircraft.

Details of the additional Boeing order are expected to be disclosed after the signing ceremony.
