
BDA completes 1,441 percolation wells to boost Bengaluru's groundwater
BDA finishes 1,441 percolation wells in 77 parks and residential premises, targeting annual groundwater recharge of 18.45 crore litres.
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has completed the construction of 1,441 rainwater-harvesting percolation wells across 77 BDA parks and residential premises in the city. The infrastructure is expected to recharge approximately 184.59 million litres (18.459 crore litres) of rainwater into the ground every year.
BDA Chairman N.A. Haris formally handed over the completed wells to the concerned BDA authorities during a programme held at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, 4th Block, on Thursday. These authorities will now be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the structures.
The initiative was carried out under the 'One Billion Drops (OBD) – Groundwater Recharge through Percolation Wells' project, implemented by United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe) in collaboration with the BDA between February 2025 and February 2026.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Haris emphasised the importance of water conservation for the city's future. "Bengaluru's water security depends on how effectively the city conserved and recharged water. Every drop we recharge today strengthens Bengaluru's tomorrow," he said, adding that the wells would aid groundwater recharge and enhance the city's resilience.
The project is estimated to benefit around 82,300 people. Beyond groundwater recharge, the wells are expected to reduce surface runoff, contribute to flood mitigation, and bolster climate resilience.
Each well is approximately 12 feet deep and was constructed following geological and GIS-based assessments. These surveys helped identify suitable sites based on recharge potential, runoff patterns, available open space, and maintenance feasibility. The structures are equipped with concrete rings, aggregate packing, iron mesh, and protective covers.
In a related development, the BDA also launched the digital platform GreenBengaluruByBDA.in. This portal is designed to monitor greening initiatives and sapling health, while also offering volunteering opportunities, educational tours, and a channel for citizen queries.
