Belagavi residents oppose army control of key cantonment roads
Belagavi residents protest proposed army takeover of three roads and high barricades on two others in the cantonment area.
Residents of Belagavi have urged the Cantonment Board to drop plans that would restrict civilian movement on several roads within the cantonment area. The appeal comes amid proposals to hand over control of Albert Ekka Road, Smart Road, and Queen’s Garden Road to the army, and to install tall barricades on Independence Road and Gymkhana Road.
Locals argue that such measures would effectively bar them from using these routes, which serve as important connectors for daily commuters. The proposed transfer of the three roads to military control is seen as a move that could severely limit public access, while the high barricades on the other two roads are viewed as an additional hurdle to free movement.
The Cantonment Board has been urged to reconsider these proposals, with residents emphasising the need to balance security requirements with the convenience of the local population. The issue highlights the ongoing friction between civilian needs and military protocols in cantonment areas, where jurisdictional boundaries often overlap with everyday civic life.
