Belagavi Police Ban DJ Systems, Plasma Displays for Ganesh Festival

Ahead of the Ganesh festival, Belagavi Police Commissioner Prakash Nikam has announced a strict ban on the use of DJ systems and high-decibel loudspeakers during idol arrival processions. In a move to curb noise and light pollution, authorities will also not permit plasma or laser displays, citing potential risks to eyesight and public health.

Commissioner Nikam has held multiple meetings with office bearers of various Ganesh Mandals, alongside federation chairman Vikas Kalaghatagi, to reiterate compliance with court judgments and administrative guidelines. While affirming that the police have no intention to curb festive spirit, he stressed that adherence to rules is essential for peaceful celebrations.

A key concern raised by the Commissioner is the trend of last-minute changes to approved procession routes. He warned that such alterations could lead to law-and-order complications and unnecessary friction between police and mandal members. Organisers have been urged to stick to pre-approved paths and complete idol arrival ceremonies before 10 p.m.

The police have been preparing for the immersion procession for the past two months, with security arrangements planned based on inputs from intelligence agencies, the city corporation, and district administration. Noting that the procession routinely stretches to 36 hours, Nikam has called for expediting the event. He observed that while mandals previously competed to be first, they now appear to vie for the last slot, prolonging the event for organisers, officers, and the public alike.

Addressing the escalation in sound system usage, the Commissioner noted that what once involved one or two speakers has grown into literal walls of speakers, posing health risks to senior citizens, children, and the sick. He has instructed that any sound systems used must remain within prescribed decibel norms.

Emphasising the strategic importance of maintaining peace in Belagavi, the Commissioner warned that any untoward incident in the city could have repercussions across three states. Separate norms for the immersion procession will be issued in due course.
