Belgian Builders Unearth Gold Hoard Worth €9 Million

A routine renovation project in the Belgian city of Dendermonde took an extraordinary turn this week when workers uncovered a hidden fortune in gold. The cache, consisting of dozens of bars and hundreds of coins, is estimated to be worth approximately €9 million ($10.5 million).

The discovery was made on Tuesday morning by a team of eight workers carrying out excavation work at the property. The find came to light in an unusual way: the drill bit became stuck during operations, and upon investigation, the crew found it had struck a gold bar.

The workers immediately alerted the property owner, who in turn contacted the police to officially document the discovery. Dendermonde Police District Chief Patrick Feys confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the drill bit hitting the gold bar was the first indication of the treasure below.

Once the gold was brought to the police station, officials took meticulous steps to secure it. The inventory process was conducted under camera surveillance, with four people working simultaneously to ensure accuracy and prevent any future disputes. After the count was completed, the entire cache was sealed to restrict access while the investigation continues.

Authorities are now working to determine how long the gold had been hidden, who placed it there, and who holds legal ownership. These findings will ultimately decide the fate of the fortune. Police Chief Feys expressed hope that the gold could eventually be used for a worthy cause, though he stressed that such a decision would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
