Bengaluru civic body fines 10 food outlets at Koramangala mall for waste rule violations
BBMP fined 10 food outlets at Nexus Mall Koramangala for waste segregation lapses and single-use plastic use. Fines ranged from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000.
The Greater Bengaluru civic body has imposed fines on ten food court outlets at Nexus Mall in Koramangala for violating solid waste management regulations. The action followed an inspection conducted on August 28 to check compliance with civic waste norms.
Inspectors found that several outlets were not segregating wet and dry waste at the source, a mandatory requirement for commercial establishments. Additionally, the use of banned single-use plastic was detected at one outlet.
Penalties imposed
The fines ranged from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, depending on the nature of the violations. Chaska Bun received the highest penalty of ₹25,000. McDonald's, Burger King, and Fish & Chips were each fined ₹10,000. Popeyes, Good Flippin' Burgers, Wow Wow China, Nagas, KFC, and Shiv Sagar were each issued fines of ₹5,000.
Mandatory waste segregation
Civic officials reiterated that food courts, malls, hotels, and other commercial establishments must segregate wet and dry waste at the source. The separated waste must be handed over for collection and processing as per prescribed rules.
More inspections planned
The civic body stated that similar checks will continue across Bengaluru. Businesses that repeatedly violate the rules could face stricter enforcement measures and legal action. The drive is part of broader efforts to improve waste segregation practices and curb the use of prohibited single-use plastic in food-service establishments.
Separate action on medical college canteens
In a related development, food safety officials have issued notices to canteens and kitchens in five medical college hostels in Karnataka. This followed inspections of 34 such facilities on August 27, which uncovered violations including expired food products and labelling irregularities.
Officials seized seven kg of expired rava (semolina) and eight litres of milk stored in one kitchen. Labelling violations were detected at another canteen. Legal action is being initiated against the concerned food business operators under the applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and Rules.
