Bengaluru Traffic Police Announce Vehicle Curbs on Five Flyovers from September 4

The Bengaluru Traffic Police will enforce new vehicle restrictions on five flyovers and elevated corridors starting September 4. The measures, announced on Sunday, are part of a trial initiative aimed at easing traffic flow, improving road safety, and reducing fatal accidents.

The restrictions vary by corridor. On the Electronics City Elevated Corridor, the most stringent curbs will apply: all goods vehicles (heavy, medium, and light) will be banned from 6 am to 10 pm, while two-wheelers, passenger autorickshaws, and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws will be prohibited round-the-clock. This corridor has recorded more fatal accidents than the others, according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy.

The International Airport Road Elevated Corridor (from Sanjeevnagar Cross to Vidyashilp Junction) will bar two-wheelers and autorickshaws for 24 hours, with all goods vehicles restricted from 6 am to 10 pm. On the Peenya Elevated Corridor, passenger and goods autorickshaws face a full-day ban, while heavy and medium goods vehicles are restricted during peak hours (7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm).

The Double-Decker Flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda will prohibit heavy goods vehicles throughout the day. The BGS Flyover is also covered under the new rules, though specific restrictions were not detailed in the announcement.

Reddy explained that the decisions were based on factors including road design, width, accident severity, breakdown-related congestion, entry-exit bottlenecks, emergency management, and pedestrian safety. Frequent breakdowns of goods vehicles on flyovers were a key concern.

While restrictions on most corridors begin September 4, the Electronics City Elevated Corridor curbs will take effect a week later, on September 11. The traffic police will review the impact of the trial before deciding on further changes.
