Bengaluru 'Peptide Party' Called Off After Food Safety Regulator Steps In

The organisers of the 'Peptide Party', scheduled to be held in Koramangala, Bengaluru, on Saturday, have cancelled the event following an inquiry by the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA). The decision came after the regulator sought detailed information about the peptide products that were to be promoted or made available at the gathering.

In a public advisory issued on Friday, the FSDA stated that authorised representatives of Upsurge Labs LLP, the event's organiser, had submitted a written statement confirming the cancellation. The organisers also requested additional time to submit relevant documents, and the department said they were given an opportunity to produce the required paperwork.

The FSDA had issued a notice on Thursday after noticing social media publicity for the event. The department observed that the identity, composition, source, intended use, and regulatory status of the preparations were not clearly established in the promotional material. It sought details of each peptide product, import licences, and other regulatory approvals.

A key point in the notice was whether the products would qualify as 'drugs' under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. If not, the organisers were asked to provide the statutory basis for such classification. The regulator also sought scientific evidence and regulatory approvals for claims related to weight management, muscle growth, and other benefits. Additionally, it asked about medical supervision, consent procedures, and arrangements for handling adverse events if the products were to be administered.

The notice also covered products that might have been presented as food, health supplements, or nutraceuticals, in which case the organisers were required to provide the relevant FSSAI licence and other details.

The FSDA clarified that the information available was not being treated as conclusive evidence of any violation. The publicity material, however, raised questions that needed examination, including whether any proposed human use had the required regulatory and ethical clearances.

The organisers were directed to submit the information by 10.30 a.m. on Friday. The notice warned that failure to provide the documents could lead to the event being kept on hold and further regulatory action. The Friday advisory confirmed that the organisers had since communicated the cancellation.

Health Minister U.T. Khader noted that the cancellation came amid considerable discussion and criticism on social media over the proposed event. The FSDA's action, he said, was focused on establishing the regulatory status of the products and the nature of their proposed use, rather than making a final finding on the legality of the event or the products.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids with various functions in the body. While some, like insulin and certain other peptide-based drugs, have well-established medical uses, many peptides promoted online for weight loss, muscle recovery, longevity, or wellness purposes are still under investigation. Some are sold without the regulatory approval required for medicines.
