The Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Bengaluru has registered 2,311 cases of trespassing on railway tracks over the past two months, collecting ₹11.57 lakh in fines as part of a sustained drive to enhance passenger safety and prevent unauthorised entry onto rail corridors.
Officials from South Western Railway (SWR) emphasised that crossing or walking on tracks at non-designated points is not only dangerous but also a punishable offence under Section 147 of the Railways Act, 1989. Violators face penalties as prescribed by law.
A senior official warned that such trespassing can lead to severe injuries or fatalities, and also disrupt train operations and inconvenience passengers. The RPF has reiterated its appeal to the public to avoid crossing tracks even when a train is stationary at a platform.
Passengers are being directed to use foot overbridges, lifts, escalators, and designated pedestrian crossings to move between platforms. Enforcement teams continue to operate across the division while awareness campaigns educate commuters about the legal and physical risks of entering railway premises without authorisation.
"Enforcement action would continue against those found violating the law. We urge people to follow safety rules and use the designated facilities available at railway stations," an official said.
