
Bengaluru to Ban Two-Wheelers on KIA, Electronics City Elevated Corridors from September
Bengaluru Traffic Police will ban two-wheelers on KIA and Electronics City elevated corridors from September, citing accident data and safety concerns.
Bengaluru's two major elevated corridors will be off-limits to two-wheelers starting next month, as the city's traffic police implement a phased set of restrictions aimed at reducing accidents and improving traffic flow.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) announced that from September 4, two-wheelers will be barred from the Airport Road elevated corridor towards Kempe Gowda International Airport (KIA), the BGS Flyover, the Peenya Elevated Corridor, and the Double-Decker Flyover. A week later, on September 11, the same restriction will take effect on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor.
The decision follows a comprehensive review of accident data on these stretches, which the BTP said highlighted the role of speed variations between different vehicle types. Officials also cited the design and width of the flyovers, the severity of past accidents, congestion caused by vehicle breakdowns, and challenges in managing traffic during emergencies as key factors.
A senior traffic police officer said the move had been under consideration for some time, given the rising number of accidents on these routes. "A comprehensive review of data was done before taking the decision. We will review the impact of these restrictions and make necessary adjustments in the future," the officer said.
On the Electronics City corridor, another officer noted that its current operator, Bangalore Elevated Tollway Pvt. Ltd. (BETPL), is nearing the end of its term. While discussions are underway about handing the flyover to the Greater Bengaluru Authority, the officer said the police would coordinate with BETPL regardless of the outcome.
The restrictions are expected to draw commuter backlash, as both corridors are heavily used by office-goers. The BTP has appealed for public cooperation, stating the measures are necessary for safety and smoother traffic movement.
