Betul-Khandwa Four-Lane Highway to Slash Indore-Nagpur Travel to Six Hours

The central government has approved the construction of a four-lane highway between Betul and Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, a project expected to significantly upgrade road connectivity in central India. Once completed, the corridor will reduce travel time between Indore and Nagpur from the current 13–14 hours to roughly six hours, bringing the route close to expressway standards.

The highway forms part of the broader Betul-Khandwa-Vadodara corridor, which will directly link major national highways including NH-47, NH-753, and NH-52. It will also connect key infrastructure such as the airports in Indore and Nagpur, Indore's Multi-Modal Logistics Park, and major railway stations in Betul and Khandwa. This integration is expected to ease long-distance travel and improve freight movement between Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Within Madhya Pradesh, the route will enhance access to cities like Indore, Betul, Khandwa, Burhanpur, and Barwani. In Maharashtra, it will improve connectivity to Nagpur, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Akola, Washim, Hingoli, and Nanded. For Gujarat, the highway will provide a direct link from Khandwa to commercial hubs such as Ahmedabad and Vadodara, strengthening interstate trade and transport.

The corridor is also expected to play a vital role during the Ujjain Simhastha 2028, as it will improve the road link between the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain and the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Khandwa district. Pilgrims travelling from Maharashtra and Gujarat will benefit from faster access to both sacred sites. Beyond religious tourism, the project is anticipated to boost economic activity and regional integration across the three states.
