Bhakra Nangal Dam Safe, Parliamentary Panel Told Amid Safety Concerns
Parliamentary energy panel chairman says Bhakra Nangal dam is safe, after members sought an audit and raised concerns over flood risks similar to Nepal.
The chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy, Shrirang Appa Chandu Barne, has said the Bhakra Nangal dam is safe, following a meeting where members sought a fresh assessment of the structure's condition.
During the panel's proceedings on Monday, members raised the issue of an audit for the dam, noting the length of time since its construction. Barne said the committee asked the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) for its evaluation, particularly in light of earlier speculation about the dam's safety.
"The Chairman of the Board told us that the Bhakra Nangal dam is safe," Barne said, adding that the panel had specifically requested information on the matter.
The discussion also referenced recent flash floods in Nepal, with members asking whether similar risks could emerge in India. Barne said questions were raised and information was provided on those issues.
The meeting was convened to examine the role of power sector statutory bodies, public sector undertakings, and institutions in building an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) power sector. Representatives from the Ministry of Power and the BBMB briefed the committee.
Beyond dam safety, the panel reviewed the sector's progress and efforts to strengthen domestic capabilities. Barne noted that since 2014, the government has focused heavily on the power sector, with several hydropower projects taken up and solar capacity expanded.
On solar energy, Barne said efforts are underway to reduce dependence on other countries, particularly China. He highlighted that more domestic companies have entered the sector and projects have been undertaken across several states. Attention is also being given to wind power and other green energy areas, he added.
