India's BHASHINI Platform Hosts Developer Session in Nepal to Expand Language AI Collaboration

The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, conducted a developer-focused session titled 'BHASHINI शिल्पी' at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Wednesday. The event was designed to engage Nepal's technology community in exploring the potential of Language AI.

The session moved beyond a conventional tech talk, offering participants hands-on exposure to BHASHINI's application programming interfaces (APIs) and developer resources. Attendees were guided through the platform's development journey, from initial problem-solving to scaling innovations. A key segment, 'Innovate with BHASHINI', encouraged participants to transform real-world challenges into prototype solutions.

Live demonstrations and an open Q&A session allowed developers to interact directly with the BHASHINI team, clarifying technical queries and discussing potential use cases. The initiative aims to cultivate a community of builders who can leverage language technology to address diverse linguistic needs across communities.

Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event. He noted that Language AI becomes meaningful when developers can use it to solve pertinent problems, and that the partnership with Nepal is about jointly building an ecosystem for technology that works across languages.

BHASHINI, India's national platform for AI-powered multilingual inclusion, already supports 36 Indian text languages, 23 Indian voice languages, and 35 international languages. It powers over 800 government websites and processes more than 24 million AI inferences daily. The Kathmandu session is seen as a step towards strengthening India-Nepal collaboration in language technology, fostering an exchange of ideas between developers, academia, and innovators from both nations.
