Fake Cop Arrested in Bihar for Extortion and Train Murder
Bihar police arrest Rohit Tiwari, 25, for impersonating police, extorting train passengers, and pushing a man off a moving train after a failed extortion bid.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Bihar for allegedly impersonating a police officer, extorting money from train passengers, and pushing a 21-year-old labourer off a moving train after a failed extortion attempt.
The accused, Rohit Tiwari, a native of Bariswan village in Bhojpur district, was held from the Mohansarai area between Buxar and Banaras. According to police, Tiwari would board disabled-friendly coaches on passenger trains and pose as an officer of the police, the Railway Protection Force, or the Special Task Force. He targeted labourers and young passengers, levying fake fines for smoking or ticket-related offences and assaulting those who resisted.
The case came to light after Nitin Kumar, a resident of Vaishali district who worked as a labourer in Hyderabad, called his family on the night of September 20 while returning home on the Hyderabad-Danapur special train. He told them he had been apprehended by men claiming to be police officers after smoking a cigarette and was forced off the train near Buxar station. The alleged officers then took his phone and demanded Rs 10,000 from his family.
The family agreed to send the money the next morning and transferred Rs 5,000 to Nitin's account. On September 21, another call demanded Rs 20,000. Over the course of the day, the family received several calls from their son's number but could not speak to him. Growing suspicious, they approached the Buxar Railway Police Station along with the village head and registered a case.
A special investigation team was constituted under Danapur Railway Deputy Superintendent of Police Kanchan Raj. Using technical and human intelligence, police identified the suspects and launched raids, arresting Tiwari. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, and based on his disclosure, police recovered a body from the railway tracks between Ara and Jagjivan Halt. Nitin's father, Mukesh Rai, identified the body.
According to police, Tiwari pushed Kumar off the moving train when he failed to extract money. Investigation revealed that Tiwari had been committing such crimes for a long time and has a history of criminal cases, including a theft case at Shahpur police station, a prior case at Buxar Railway Police Station, and a case registered at Danapur Railway Police Station on September 9. He had reportedly spent about 25 months in jail and was released on bail two months ago.
During the arrest, police recovered a brown wallet belonging to one Kailash Kumar, containing ATM cards, a PAN card, a disability certificate, and a voter ID card. Tiwari's own Aadhaar card was also recovered, and the matter is under investigation.
"A cunning criminal has been arrested. He has confessed to the crime of murdering a young man by pushing him off the train," said Kanchan Raj, DSP, Government Railway Police, Patna. "He was on the run in connection with several previous cases. The matter is currently under investigation."
