Bihar Drops 'Fail' From Class 10, 12 Marksheets, Will Now Say 'Eligible For Skills'

In a move aimed at safeguarding student morale, Bihar will no longer use the word 'Fail' on the marksheets of Class 10 (Matric) and Class 12 (Inter) students. Instead, certificates will carry the term 'Eligible For Skills'.

Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari made the announcement on Thursday evening during a review meeting at the Madan Mohan Auditorium in Vikas Bhawan. He stressed that a poor performance in one examination does not define a child's potential. "Not scoring the expected marks in an examination does not erase a child's potential. Therefore, words like 'Fail' will not be used on certificates," he said.

The state's Education Department will amend the relevant rules and issue directives to the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) to implement the change.

Tiwari also revealed that students appearing for the Matric compartment examinations will be offered special one-month classes. This initiative is designed to give them a better chance to prepare and improve their results.

The review meeting also covered preparations for the upcoming Teachers' Day function, scheduled for September 5 at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary will inaugurate the event, which will also be attended by both Deputy Chief Ministers. On the occasion, the Chief Minister will launch a 'Teacher Support Portal', and one teacher from each district will be honoured with the State Award.

Students from 10 model schools in Patna, designated as Saraswati Vidya Niketan, along with teachers from DIETs, SCERT, and teacher training centres, have been invited to the ceremony.

Additionally, the minister reviewed the income and expenditure of departments including the Bihar Education Project Council, and directed officials to focus on the effective implementation of schemes and proper resource utilisation.
