BIS seizes 430g of unmarked gold from Mysuru jewellery shop

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized roughly 430 grams of gold ornaments from a jewellery establishment in Mysuru's Lashkar Mohalla after the items were found without the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) markings.

The search and seizure operation was carried out on September 16 at Pratibha Jewels, as part of the bureau's enforcement drive against misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and breaches of hallmarking regulations.

According to an official statement, the missing HUID markings amounted to a violation of the provisions and regulations under the BIS Act, 2016. Legal proceedings against the party concerned are being initiated on the basis of the findings.

The BIS said such operations are mounted on credible inputs about misuse of its Standard Mark and violations of hallmarking rules. The measures are intended to safeguard consumer interests, check deceptive trade practices and prevent substandard and counterfeit products from circulating in the market.

The operation was supervised by P. Jayachandra Babu, Scientist-E and Director, and involved Scientist-C and Deputy Director Manish Raj, Scientist-B and Assistant Director Piyush Kumar Gupta, along with other BIS personnel.

Consumers have been advised to confirm the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery through the BIS Care App and to report suspicious or non-compliant products. Additional information is available on the BIS website.
