BJP protest at Chintakunta canal over water release for Ganesh immersion
BJP cadres staged a 'Chalo Chintakunta' dharna near Karimnagar demanding water release from the SRSP for Ganesh idol immersion, leading to detentions and allegations of a lathi-charge.
Mild tension prevailed near Karimnagar on Monday after local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cadres staged a protest at the Chintakunta canal, demanding the release of water into the canals ahead of the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony scheduled for Wednesday.
The demonstrators held a dharna under the banner of 'Chalo Chintakunta' on the Karimnagar-Vemulawada main road. Police detained several protesters following the agitation.
Addressing the gathering, local BJP leaders urged the Telangana government to immediately order the release of water from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) into Chintakunta and other canals so that the immersion festivities could be conducted smoothly.
The leaders noted that the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (MCK) had made elaborate arrangements for the immersions, but said the lack of water in tanks and other nearly dry water bodies could pose difficulties.
Protesters alleged that police resorted to a lathi-charge during the dharna. Several MCK corporators and other party workers took part in the demonstration.
