BJP Leaders in Bengal Push Back Against Bageshwar Baba’s Durga Puja Food Advice

A controversy over food habits during Durga Puja has drawn sharp reactions from BJP leaders in West Bengal, with several senior figures publicly rejecting the advice of self-styled godman Dhirendra Shastri, also known as Bageshwar Baba.
Shastri had suggested that non-vegetarian food should not be sold near Durga Puja idols. His remarks triggered strong responses from state ministers and veteran party leaders, who have rallied behind BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya.
Bhattacharya had earlier dismissed the suggestion, asserting that Bengalis will continue to eat non-vegetarian food during the festival. His stance has now received support from within the party, with ministers and senior leaders echoing the sentiment that local traditions and personal choice should not be dictated by outside figures.
The pushback highlights a rare internal disagreement within the BJP over cultural advice from religious figures. While some party members may respect Shastri’s spiritual authority, the Bengal unit appears united in defending the state’s culinary customs during one of its biggest festivals.
