BJP urges EC to extend voter list revision deadline in Telangana
BJP has asked the Election Commission to extend the deadline for claims and objections in Telangana's electoral roll revision by three weeks, citing delivery gaps and errors.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the Election Commission to extend the deadline for submitting claims and objections under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Telangana. The party warned that without additional time, many eligible voters could be left out of the final list.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer in Hyderabad, BJP state general secretary Vemula Ashok requested that the deadline be moved from September 16 to October 7. The party also sought an extension for issuing notices and disposing of claims and objections from October 15 to November 6.
The BJP said that of the 92.88 lakh notices generated for voters whose records showed discrepancies or lacked mapping with the 2002 electoral rolls, only 31.74 lakh notices had been delivered so far. Hearings had been conducted in just 1.94 lakh cases at the Assistant Electoral Officer level, it added.
The party alleged that more than 45 lakh voters had been categorised as 'absent, shifted, dead or duplicate' and marked as permanently shifted. This led to their names being removed from the draft rolls even though many continue to reside at the same addresses.
Citing a polling station in the Karwan Assembly constituency as an example, the BJP claimed several voters had been wrongly classified. It also said voters in the GHMC area and other municipal corporations were receiving notices asking for details from the 2002 rolls despite their records already being mapped.
The party has asked the Election Commission to address these issues and provide more time to ensure no eligible voter is excluded from the electoral rolls.
