BJP Booth Worker Shot Dead in West Bengal's Birbhum, Police Probe Underway
A 46-year-old BJP booth worker, Chandan Bhalla, was shot dead in Birbhum's Trishulapatty on Sunday evening. Police are investigating; the party demands action within 24 hours.
A booth-level worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party was allegedly shot dead in the Trishulapatty area of West Bengal's Birbhum district on Sunday evening, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Chandan Bhalla, aged 46.
Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh said that on prima facie grounds, the man appeared to have been killed by gunfire. He added that the exact cause of death would be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination is completed.
Investigators are working to trace those responsible, and further inquiry into the circumstances of the killing is continuing, police said.
According to members of Bhalla's family, he had received a telephone call from a person who has not yet been identified, after which he left his home.
Shyamapada Mondal, president of the BJP's Bolpur organisational district, described Bhalla as an "old and active worker" of the party. He called the killing unfortunate and urged the police administration to act within 24 hours.
The death has brought attention to the law-and-order situation in the district, with the investigation now focused on identifying the caller and establishing the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
