BOJ's Takata Calls for Nimble Rate Hikes, Flags Inflation Risks

BOJ's Hajime Takata urges nimble rate hikes, citing need to prevent upward price deviations and respond to external demand shocks.

Bank of Japan (BOJ) board member Hajime Takata has called for a nimble approach to interest rate hikes, emphasizing the need to carefully assess domestic financial conditions and monitor overseas developments before acting. Speaking to business leaders in Sapporo on Wednesday, Takata outlined his view that the central bank must begin transitioning away from its current policy stance, which has been focused on encouraging a rise in underlying inflation.

Takata argued that the BOJ should now demonstrate to markets its determination to prevent any upward deviations in prices. His remarks underscore a growing concern within the central bank about inflationary pressures stemming from potential external demand shocks.

Takata was the sole dissenter to the BOJ's July decision to hold short-term interest rates steady at 1%. He had advocated for an immediate rate hike to 1.25%, citing the need to proactively address these inflationary risks. His latest comments reinforce his hawkish position and signal a potential divergence of views within the board regarding the pace of future monetary policy normalization.
