Lula, Flavio Bolsonaro Statistically Tied in Brazil Runoff Scenario: Poll
Brazil's Lula leads Flavio Bolsonaro 46% to 45% in a simulated runoff, a BTG Pactual/Nexus poll shows, with the race statistically tied.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro remain statistically tied in a hypothetical runoff ahead of next month's election, according to a BTG Pactual/Nexus poll released on Monday.
In a simulated second-round matchup, Lula would take 46% of voter support against 45% for Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The one-point gap falls within the survey's margin of error of 2 percentage points.
A previous poll on September 14 had shown Lula leading by 47% to 46% in the same runoff scenario.
In a first-round scenario, Lula leads with 40% of the vote, followed by Flavio Bolsonaro at 37%. Augusto Cury stands at 6%, Ronaldo Caiado at 5% and Renan Santos at 3%.
The earlier first-round survey had put Lula at 42%, Flavio Bolsonaro at 37% and Cury at 6%.
Under Brazil's electoral rules, if no candidate secures more than 50% of valid votes in the first round on October 4, the two frontrunners advance to a runoff on October 25.
Nexus surveyed 2,006 people from September 18 to 20. The poll carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
