Brazil Holds Back Reciprocity Law Against US Tariffs as Talks Continue, Lula Says
Brazil will not invoke its reciprocity law against US tariffs while trade negotiations are ongoing, President Lula da Silva has said.
Brazil has decided against invoking its reciprocity law in response to tariffs imposed by the United States for as long as trade negotiations between the two countries remain underway, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said.
In an interview with CNN International's Christiane Amanpour, Lula said the Brazilian government does not intend to deploy the measure at this stage. He was speaking through a translator.
The president indicated, however, that the option has not been set aside permanently. Should the ongoing talks fail to yield a resolution, Brazil could still move to reciprocate against the US tariffs, he said.
The remarks signal a preference in Brasilia for keeping the negotiating channel open rather than escalating into tit-for-tat trade measures. By holding the reciprocity law in reserve, the government retains a potential response while giving diplomacy room to work.
No timeline was given for the negotiations, and Lula did not elaborate on what conditions would prompt Brazil to activate the law.
