BRICS Leaders Flag Nuclear Risks, Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure in New Delhi Declaration
BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration, voicing concern over nuclear dangers and attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities, as Delhi issued summit-day traffic curbs.
BRICS leaders have voiced serious concern over what they described as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and on peaceful nuclear facilities operating under full International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards, saying such actions violate international law and relevant IAEA resolutions.
The position was set out in the New Delhi Declaration, adopted on the opening day of the two-day BRICS Summit hosted by India. The declaration also flagged the growing risks of nuclear danger and conflict, and stressed that nuclear safety and security must be upheld at all times, including during armed conflicts.
The text did not identify any country in connection with the concerns it raised.
Separately, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for Sunday, asking commuters to plan their journeys in advance and to avoid affected areas where possible. The restrictions stem from the ongoing summit and the India-Afghanistan T20 cricket match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Traffic regulations will remain in force in the notified controlled area from 8 am to 8 pm, with particular emphasis on periods when dignitaries attending the summit are on the move, the advisory said.
