Britney Spears Biopic Still in the Works, Screenwriter Confirms

The long-gestating biopic about pop icon Britney Spears is still moving forward, with screenwriter Liz Meriwether confirming the project is in its early stages. Meriwether, best known as the creator of New Girl, is currently working on the screenplay adapted from Spears' 2023 bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me.

In a recent interview, Meriwether said she is "really at the beginning of the process" of crafting the script. She noted that Spears' experiences were shaped by a unique convergence of intense media attention and the rise of new digital platforms, calling it a "perfect storm."

The film, which Universal Pictures acquired rights to in August 2024, will be directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Marc Platt. Spears herself has confirmed her involvement. Meriwether has immersed herself in the singer's world, listening to Spears' full music catalog and revisiting the late-1990s and early-2000s pop landscape to capture the era's essence.

She also praised the audiobook version of the memoir, narrated by Michelle Williams, calling it "one of the best audiobooks that's ever been made." Meriwether, who is the same age as Spears, believes the timing is right for audiences to re-examine how women in the public eye were treated during that period.
