Bardem and Cruz Bring Marital Thriller 'Bunker' to Venice Competition

Venice, September 8: The Venice Film Festival's competition slate gained a high-profile entry on Tuesday as "Bunker" held its world premiere. The thriller, directed by Florian Zeller, features real-life spouses Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz as a married couple navigating a period of intense strain.
The film's narrative centers on an architect who agrees to design an underground survivalist bunker for a wealthy client. The project becomes a catalyst for tension within the couple's long-term relationship, which is already fraying under pressure.
Zeller, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2021 for "The Father," returns to the festival circuit with this project. His previous directorial effort, "The Son," was nominated for the Golden Lion at Venice in 2022.
"Bunker" also features Stephen Graham, Paul Dano, and Patrick Schwarzenegger in supporting roles. The premiere was attended by the principal cast, including Graham, Schwarzenegger, Cruz, and Zeller, who walked the red carpet ahead of the screening.
The film marks another collaboration between Bardem and Cruz, who have been married since 2010 and have frequently appeared together on screen. Their on-screen partnership here explores the dynamics of a marriage tested by external ambition and internal doubt.
