Burnham to Set Out Options for UK's Long-Term EU Relationship
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he will lay out options for Britain's long-term relationship with the EU and seek consensus around one.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he intends to set out the options for the country's long-term relationship with the European Union and will work to build consensus around a single path forward.
Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool on Tuesday, Burnham said he would use the period around an upcoming UK-EU summit to present his assessment of the choices available to Britain.
"I will take the opportunity around the summit to lay out to you, to lay out to the country, what I believe the different options are for Britain's long-term relationship with our European partners," he told party delegates.
The prime minister added that he would then test whether agreement could be reached on one of those options, saying: "I will see if we can find consensus around one."
In his remarks, Burnham also stated his view that "Brexit has done more harm than good."
The comments come ahead of a planned meeting between the United Kingdom and the European bloc, with the prime minister positioning the summit as a moment to frame the debate over the future partnership.
