BWSSB to add IoT monitoring to 6,000 more borewells by March 2027
BWSSB will install IoT devices in 6,000 more of its borewells by March 2027, following a first phase covering 1,800, to monitor water depth, extraction and pumps.
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will install Internet of Things (IoT) devices in 6,000 additional borewells it owns by the end of March 2027, as part of a second phase of its monitoring programme.
The first phase covered 1,800 of the Board's 16,000 borewells. Under the plan, every borewell in the Board's network will eventually be fitted with the devices, which are intended to track water depth, extraction levels and pump sets.
BWSSB Chairperson N. Manjula said the shift would make borewell management more scientific, efficient and data-driven. She noted that operating pumps when water is insufficient, running pump sets longer than needed, and detecting faults only after they occur frequently result in repeated technical failures. Monitoring through IoT, she said, would allow such problems to be spotted early, cutting equipment damage and avoidable spending.
According to the Board, the devices will be monitored centrally through two dashboards. The system is expected to flag borewells where water availability is falling, prevent unnecessary pump operation, and reduce instances of motors burning out from prolonged or dry running. It is also expected to bring down maintenance costs and improve operational efficiency.
The continuous stream of data on groundwater levels and usage patterns across different areas is expected to give the Board a clearer picture of groundwater conditions and support steps towards more sustainable utilisation.
