Calicut University Syndicate member seeks full Vande Mataram at convocation
A pro-BJP Syndicate member at Calicut University has asked the Vice-Chancellor to ensure Vande Mataram is sung in full at the October 6 honorary doctorate ceremony.
A Syndicate member of the University of Calicut has written to Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran seeking that the National Song, Vande Mataram, be sung in its entirety at the honorary doctorate presentation ceremony scheduled for October 6.
The ceremony will be attended by Governor and Chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Higher Education Minister Roji M. John.
In his letter dated Tuesday, September 29, Syndicate member A.K. Anuraj — identified as a pro-BJP member of the university body — argued that singing only a portion of the song would attract penal provisions under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026.
His communication follows news reports that Syndicate members owing allegiance to the Left had asked the authorities to restrict the rendition to two stanzas at the event.
Mr. Anuraj further contended that since the Governor was the chief guest, the official protocol laid down by the Union Home Ministry ought to be followed.
The matter now rests with the Vice-Chancellor, who has been urged to issue the necessary direction before the convocation.
