
Can Stomach Acid Really Dissolve Razor Blades? The Science Explained
Lab acid can corrode razor blades in hours, but the human stomach's short transit time makes swallowing blades dangerous.
A startling claim often circulates online: that human stomach acid is powerful enough to dissolve razor blades. While the idea sounds like a myth, it is rooted in a real scientific experiment from 1997, published in the journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Researchers tested how stainless-steel razor blades, disc batteries, and pennies fared when immersed in simulated gastric juice at body temperature (37°C).
The results showed that razor blades corroded significantly over time. After 24 hours, double-edged blades weighed only 63% of their original mass and became fragile enough to be broken with an endoscopic snare. The thickened back of a single-edged blade dissolved completely in just two hours. However, disc batteries showed no leakage over the same period, and pennies remained unaffected.
These findings highlight that stomach-level acidity can indeed corrode thin metal under laboratory conditions. But the practical takeaway is different. In the human body, food typically stays in the stomach for only 30 to 120 minutes—far too short a time for meaningful metal breakdown. Swallowing a razor blade or any sharp object is extremely dangerous and can cause perforation, bleeding, infection, or even death. Such cases require urgent medical intervention, often endoscopic or surgical removal.
The study's authors noted that the corrosion rate of blades could help guide the timing of endoscopic removal, but they also stressed the risks. Modern disk batteries, for instance, are acid-resistant for at least 24 hours, meaning they can cause serious internal damage if ingested.
In short, while the science behind the claim is accurate in a lab setting, the human stomach is not a safe disposal unit for metal objects. The best advice remains: never test this—seek immediate medical help if someone swallows a blade or battery.
