Canada pledges $5 million in aid to Nepal after catastrophic floods

Canada has announced an emergency humanitarian package of $5 million for Nepal, where catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border have killed hundreds and left thousands missing. The funding is intended to support trusted relief partners, including the Red Cross, Canadian NGOs, and UN agencies, in delivering food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, and sanitation to affected communities.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said that as of the latest update, 32 Canadians — some of them permanent residents — have not had their whereabouts confirmed. Families in Canada are anxiously awaiting news as search and rescue efforts continue in the region.
Minister of State for International Development Randeep Singh Sarai said initial estimates suggest around 100,000 people require urgent humanitarian assistance. The floods have destroyed homes and entire villages, while mudslides have wiped out bridges and other infrastructure, cutting off communities from essential services such as telecommunications.
In addition to the direct contribution, Canada has offered to deploy relief supplies from its emergency stockpiles through the Canadian Red Cross if requested. Existing pooled funds have also been activated, including a drawdown of $100 million from the International Federation of Red Cross Disaster Response Emergency Fund to the Nepal Red Cross, and $2 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for immediate lifesaving operations.
