Canada Slaps Retaliatory Tariffs on 700+ US Products
Canada will impose counter-tariffs on over 700 US goods from Sept 8, matching US tariffs dollar-for-dollar.
The Canadian government has announced retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American products, a move designed to mirror the latest US trade measures. The new duties, valued at 27.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 20 billion USD), are scheduled to come into effect on September 8.
Officials stated that the countermeasures are calibrated to match the total value of Canadian goods hit by the recent 50-percent US tariffs, achieving a "dollar-for-dollar" response. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the tariffs, along with a multi-billion-dollar aid package, are intended to shield workers, farmers, and families from the impact.
The Finance Ministry's list shows the new tariffs target sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Rates are set at three levels: 15 percent, 25 percent, and 50 percent. For steel and aluminum, existing counter-tariffs will rise from 25 percent to 50 percent to match US rates. Other existing duties, such as those on American autos, will remain in place.
A 25-percent tariff will apply to dairy products like cheese, as well as fish, seafood, and certain steel and aluminum derivatives.
Alongside the trade measures, the federal government unveiled a 7.5-billion-Canadian-dollar relief package focused on small and medium-sized enterprises. The plan aims to help companies avoid layoffs, fund skills training for workers, and make it easier to access employment insurance.
