Canada Pulls Seafood From Retaliatory Tariff List

Canada has revised its planned retaliatory tariffs against the United States, dropping seafood and fish products from the list of affected goods. The adjustment comes just one day after Ottawa announced counter-tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of American products.

The Department of Finance announced the change on X, stating that the decision was made following feedback from stakeholders. The department said the "select adjustments" were designed to "protect against economic harms," which included removing seafood and fish products from the tariff schedule.

The move is part of Canada's broader response to new US tariffs. Washington recently imposed a 50% duty on Canadian imports, and Ottawa has said it will match those levies dollar for dollar. The Canadian government maintains that it is in continuous consultation with domestic industries to gauge the effectiveness of its measures, with particular attention paid to sectors directly targeted by US tariffs.

The revised Canadian tariff package is scheduled to take effect on September 8.
