Canada Announces Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs on US Goods
Canada will impose matching tariffs on $20B of US goods from Sept 8, responding to Washington's 50% duties.
Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States, matching the duties imposed by Washington last week "dollar for dollar, rate for rate."
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne unveiled the measures at a news conference in Ottawa on Tuesday, saying the new tariffs would take effect on September 8. The response targets approximately $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment.
Champagne described the US tariffs as an "unprecedented challenge" but insisted Canadians "will meet the moment together." He warned that the American duties "will have real consequences for Canadian workers, businesses and communities across our nation."
"Canada must respond, and today we are," he said.
The escalation follows the Trump administration's imposition of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods over the weekend, after trade negotiations collapsed. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of attempting to subordinate Canada, saying US demands during the failed talks showed Americans wanted to "destroy our major industries."
The dispute threatens one of the world's largest trading relationships. The new tariffs extend beyond industrial products, affecting everyday items such as seafood, cheese, clothing, cosmetics, and toilet paper, with some facing duties as high as 50%.
