Wet Year Triggers Costly Fungicide Battle on Canadian Prairies
A wet spring has caused widespread fungal diseases in Canadian crops, forcing farmers to make costly fungicide investments ahead of harvest.
Farmers across the Canadian Prairies are engaged in an expensive fight against a wave of crop diseases triggered by the region's wettest conditions in years. The outbreak, which emerged in early summer, threatens both the yield and quality of key export commodities including durum, spring wheat, canola, and pulses.
An unusually wet spring and early summer saturated the soil, creating ideal conditions for fungal pathogens once temperatures rose and humidity climbed. This has left growers with a difficult financial decision: invest further in crops that may not be profitable this year, or risk losing them entirely to disease.
Many have chosen to invest. Jake Leguee, a farmer in southeastern Saskatchewan who cultivates roughly 19,000 acres, applied fungicide across all his fields at a cost of $6 to $20 per acre. "You do what you have to," he said, noting the expense adds up quickly.
Inputs dealer Ray Redfern from Brandon, Manitoba, says this response has been widespread. He had anticipated that some farmers might hold back on spending due to tight finances, but most have treated the application as essential. "Many farmers are getting to the end of their operating line and they're running out of cash flow," he noted.
The diseases vary by crop: fusarium head blight threatens durum and spring wheat, while canola is vulnerable to sclerotinia and blackleg. Pulse crops face a range of fungal threats. In Manitoba's Red River Valley, crop adviser Brunel Sabourin says farmers with available cash or credit have spent it on protection, given the persistent moisture. "There was no question," he said.
Despite the widespread spraying, the final outcome remains uncertain. Leguee says it will be weeks before he knows if the fungicide applications were effective. While his crops, apart from lentils, look healthy on the surface, hidden damage could still be present inside the kernels and pods. "We won't know till we get the combines in the field," he said. "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."
