CARA Unveils 2026 Adoption Awareness Theme, Urges Legal Process
CARA launches 'Legal Adoption. Safe Childhood. Secure Future.' campaign for 2026 to promote lawful adoption and combat illegal practices.
The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), functioning under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, has announced the theme for its Adoption Awareness initiative for 2026. The campaign, titled 'Legal Adoption. Safe Childhood. Secure Future. Say No to Illegal Adoption!', is designed to reinforce the importance of lawful, transparent, and child-centric adoption procedures across India.
CARA CEO Bhavna Saxena formally introduced the theme during a live broadcast on DD National. She underscored that adoption must be treated as a serious responsibility rather than a casual arrangement. "Adoption is not a shortcut—it is a sacred responsibility," she said, adding that following the legally prescribed channels safeguards the rights and future of orphaned, abandoned, or surrendered children.
Unlike previous years when awareness efforts were concentrated in November, the 2026 campaign will run throughout the year. A key component involves State and Union Territory-level Adoption Awareness Workshops scheduled to begin in September 2026. These workshops aim to educate stakeholders on the statutory adoption framework, improve coordination between departments, and identify and address illegal adoption practices.
The initiative will engage a broad spectrum of participants, including Women and Child Development departments, Child Welfare Committees, District Child Protection Units, Specialised Adoption Agencies, police, health authorities, judiciary, medical professionals, and civil society groups.
As part of the rollout, CARA will hold an Adoption Awareness Workshop in Delhi on 10 September 2026 at the Delhi Secretariat, in collaboration with the city's Women and Child Development department. The session will focus on timely reporting of separated children, lawful surrender procedures, and declaring children legally free for adoption.
The campaign stresses that adoption is a legal process, not a private agreement. Citizens are encouraged to follow only the official channels through CARA and designated agencies, and to report suspected illegal adoption cases to authorities. Through sustained outreach and coordinated enforcement, CARA aims to build a protective ecosystem for every child in need.
