Italian Police Seize €3.2 Million in Anti-Mafia Raids Near Naples
Italy's Carabinieri seized €3.2 million in banknotes and arrested 34 people in an anti-mafia operation targeting an alleged Camorra-type clan near Naples.
Italian Carabinieri police have seized 3.2 million euros (about 3.6 million U.S. dollars) in banknotes during an anti-mafia operation near Naples, the force said.
Officers entered a private residence in Caivano on Monday and found hundreds of bundles of euro banknotes concealed behind walls and inside drawers, according to footage released by the Carabinieri. Video showed officers using hammers to break open a wall and recover the cash.
Anti-mafia prosecutors who ordered the operation approved the arrest of 34 people on charges including drug trafficking, extortion and illegally carrying weapons. Eleven of the suspects were placed under house arrest, while the remaining suspects were held in detention.
The Carabinieri described those detained as members of an "armed Camorra-type conspiracy, led by the Angelino clan," operating in Caivano and Casoria, on the outskirts of Naples.
The operation is the latest in a series of efforts by Italian authorities targeting organised crime networks in the Campania region, where the Camorra remains a significant presence.
