Carney, Macron honour Free France memorial, push Canada-Europe alliance

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron attended a wreath-laying ceremony at a Free France memorial on the remote North Atlantic archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon on Sunday.
The two leaders also held talks aimed at deepening economic and security ties between their countries.
Speaking at the memorial, Carney said sovereignty in the present era extends beyond a country's ability to feed, fuel and defend itself. He said it also requires secure access to artificial intelligence, space, semiconductors, critical minerals and clean energy.
"It's in this context, inspired by your example, that Canada and Europe will build an alliance for the future that will strengthen our collective resilience so we can live our lives as we choose, based on the values that we share across Fortune Bay," Carney said, addressing Macron.
The visit to the French territory off Canada's east coast combined a commemorative moment with discussions on the two sides' shared priorities.
