Casey Affleck on casting sons in gothic horror: 'Best professional experience of my life'

Casey Affleck discusses casting his sons in his new gothic horror film at Venice, calling it his best professional experience.

Venice, September 8: Casey Affleck has revealed that his two sons appear in his upcoming gothic horror film, a decision he says turned out to be the highlight of his career.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, the actor and director admitted that neither of his children was initially keen on joining the production. "I dragged them kicking and screaming is not inaccurate," he said, though he clarified that the reluctance was mutual at first.

Affleck explained that the idea emerged organically during the writing process. While rehearsing the script at home, he asked his sons to read the parts of the younger and older teenage characters. Their performances impressed him, but he had no plans to cast them formally.

That changed during pre-production when the roles remained unfilled. His sons, by then willing to participate, stepped in. Affleck described their contribution as remarkable, adding that working alongside them made the shoot "the best professional experience of my life."

The director also noted that, despite his dual role as filmmaker and father, he drew a firm line on set. When a reporter asked to hear from the boys directly, Affleck playfully declined, saying he had forbidden them from speaking to the press.

The film is being presented at the Venice festival, where Affleck serves as co-writer, director, producer, and lead actor.
