Celine Dion fans gather in Paris for giant karaoke ahead of residency

Hundreds of Celine Dion fans filled Place Stalingrad in Paris on Friday for a giant karaoke event celebrating the Canadian singer, on the eve of her return to the stage.

Crowds sang along as the lyrics to some of Dion's best-known hits appeared on a giant screen, with participants competing to deliver the night's best performance.

"We didn't get tickets to the concert, so we're making do with what we have," said Marie-France Chowrear, 66, a resident of the Paris region. She described Dion as "an exceptional, extraordinary woman" whose music continues to bring joy to people around the world.

For many in the crowd, the songs stirred powerful memories. Frédéric Lambin, 52, said the music reminded him of "first loves — and the breakups too." He compared Dion to stars such as Madonna, but said her French-language songs and down-to-earth personality had earned her a special place in French hearts.

Eva Ingelaere, another Paris region resident, attributed Dion's enduring global presence partly to her film music, including the song for "Titanic" and her contribution to the "Deadpool" franchise, which she said had introduced the singer to younger audiences. She added that the many events built around Dion, including karaoke sessions, made it almost impossible for anyone not to know her.

The Grammy-winning star is preparing a residency of 16 shows in September and October at the Plenitude Arena in the French capital's western suburbs. The first show opens on Sept. 12.
