Celine Dion Opens Paris Residency, Her First Full Concert Since 2020

Celine Dion returned to the concert stage on Saturday, opening a residency at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, west of Paris. It was her first full concert since March 8, 2020.

The 58-year-old singer was diagnosed in 2022 with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological condition. She subsequently cancelled a world tour and the dates that remained on it, and withdrew from public performance.

Saturday's show ran for two hours and 15 minutes and comprised 25 songs. It was the opening night of an engagement designed to test whether she can sustain a working schedule again.

The run is demanding. Sixteen shows are scheduled across five weeks, with a further 10 booked for May 2027, making 26 nights in all before audiences numbering in the tens of thousands at each performance.

Dion's most recent appearance before a French audience was brief by comparison. At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in July 2024, she sang a single song from the Eiffel Tower, a performance widely described as a comeback. Saturday's concert required her to repeat that effort across a full set list, with the next show due on Wednesday.

Stiff person syndrome affects roughly one or two people in a million. It causes muscle stiffness and spasms severe enough to fracture bones, and can be set off by loud noise, physical contact or emotional stress — conditions all present in an arena holding 30,000 people. Dion said in a 2024 interview that singing with the condition felt like being strangled.

Announcing the cancellation of her remaining tour dates in 2023, she noted that touring can be very difficult even for performers in full health. The gap between her last full concert and Saturday's return amounted to 2,379 days.
