Celine Dion Returns to Full Concert Stage in Paris After Six-Year Gap

Celine Dion returned to the concert stage on Saturday, opening a 26-show residency in the Paris suburb of Nanterre — her first full live performance in more than six years.

The singer, 58, began the evening at Plenitude Arena with her 1998 French-language song "On Ne Change Pas". Within moments of starting the track, she was overcome with emotion, pausing briefly to wipe away tears. She placed a hand on her chest and clasped her hands together in a gesture of thanks to the audience.

Dion went on to complete the song and performed another 1990s track, "Destin", before addressing the crowd in both French and English. She thanked fans who had travelled from around the world, welcoming first-time visitors to Paris and expressing joy at being together with them.

Speaking about her return, Dion said she had made a promise to come back to the stage, telling the audience she was singing "for you and for me, singing life". She also thanked them for their support and patience, borrowing a line from her 1996 hit "Because You Loved Me" before performing it.

Her previous full concert took place in March 2020 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The rest of that tour was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and rescheduled dates were later cancelled as she dealt with health complications.

Dion was diagnosed in 2022 with stiff-person syndrome, a rare and progressive autoimmune and neurological disorder that can cause muscle rigidity, mobility difficulties, painful spasms and shortness of breath. She has since appeared publicly on select occasions, including at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and at a fashion show in Saudi Arabia later that year. Saturday's concert, however, marked her first full performance since her condition forced her to step back from regular live shows.
