Three Central Asian nations experienced simultaneous power blackouts on Friday, disrupting electricity supply across the region. Kazakhstan's energy ministry attributed the outages to a "sudden change in the power flow" from the interconnected Central Asian grid.
The energy ministries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan all confirmed the outages and stated that restoration efforts were underway. The three countries operate interconnected electricity networks, making them vulnerable to cascading failures.
Reports from Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, and Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, confirmed power cuts. Local media in Tajikistan also reported outages in the capital, Dushanbe, and the country's second-largest city, Khujand.
Electricity shortages are a recurring challenge in Central Asia. The region's heavy reliance on hydropower has become increasingly problematic as climate change leads to water shortages, leaving hydroelectric stations vulnerable and straining the overall power supply.
