Persistent Drought Parches Central Europe, Threatening Farms and Beer
A severe drought across Central Europe is drying up farmland and threatening beer production, forcing farmers and brewers to adapt.
A severe and persistent drought is gripping Central Europe, transforming once-fertile landscapes into arid terrain and disrupting agricultural production from Hungary to the Czech Republic.
In Hungary's Great Plain, the lack of rain has left the soil critically dry. The state meteorological service reports that moisture in the top half-meter of soil has fallen below 20%, with levels in the top meter remaining under 30%. The region now faces the threat of desertification as vegetation dies off, turning grazing lands into dust.
Sándor Molnár, a dairy farmer in southern Hungary, says his land has changed dramatically. He grazes around 130 cows on property that was once lush with greenery and small ponds. "It was such a long time ago, I don't even remember when we had a proper rain," he said, noting that no significant rainfall has fallen since late May.
Molnár, who inherited the farm from his ancestors, carefully calculated the land needed for his livestock. But recent summer droughts have upended those plans. "Even though I have the right amount of land for this number of animals, they can't graze half as much as they did four or five years ago," he explained.
The decline in groundwater levels over decades is causing serious water management and agricultural problems across the Great Plain. Molnár's farm is currently operating at a loss, and he is uncertain about its long-term sustainability for his family. "We're trying to hang in there and hope for the best, hoping next year will be better," he said. "To be honest, we've been saying that for a few years now, but maybe this time it will be."
Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, the drought is threatening the country's famous brewing tradition. Low rainfall and heat waves are damaging hop crops, which are essential for beer production. Jakub Zaoral, sustainability manager at the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery, noted that the hops are not developing properly. "Normally, they should be thick all the way up the structure, because it's mainly in the top third where the largest volume of hop cones forms," he said. "Well, that's not what's happening right now."
The brewery, the country's largest beer producer, expects losses this year due to the stunted yield and potentially lower quality hops. Changing rainfall patterns, marked by long dry spells and occasional heavy storms, mean much of the precipitation runs off the dry soil. Only about 30% of Czech hop-growing land can be irrigated, limiting options for mitigation.
Economists warn that lower yields will likely lead to higher prices for consumers. Péter Virovácz, senior economist at ING Hungary, said reduced production of unprocessed food will push prices up, though the impact depends on global conditions and import costs. He also noted that additional pressures, such as the Strait of Hormuz issue, could compound the effects of the drought.
As drought becomes a more persistent feature of the European climate, farmers and industries across the region will need to adapt to a new reality of unpredictable weather and scarce water resources.
