Centre clears 2 lakh rural houses for Telangana under PMAY-G for 2026-27

The Centre has approved the construction of two lakh houses in Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for the financial year 2026-27, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy announced on Friday.

Mr. Reddy described the sanction as a significant move towards giving rural families a dignified place to live, and linked it to the Prime Minister's "Housing for All" mission.

According to the Union Minister, Telangana was unable to draw benefits from PMAY-G for several years because the earlier BRS government, then led by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, did not take part in the PMAY-G Awas Survey carried out in 2018. Without that survey, the State had no list of eligible beneficiaries on which implementation of the scheme could rest, he said.

Mr. Reddy said that after the National Democratic Alliance returned to power at the Centre for a third straight term, he wrote to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in August 2024, flagging the gap and asking for steps to close it. In his account, the Chief Minister accepted that the previous government had stayed out of the survey and requested his help in obtaining housing allocations for Telangana.

The Union Minister said he then raised the State's case with Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeking special consideration. A series of official communications and meetings followed before the housing sanctions for Telangana's rural population came through.

Mr. Reddy thanked Mr. Chouhan for his backing and said the approval of two lakh houses would help thousands of economically weaker rural families move closer to owning a home.
