Centre's Assurance on Student Cases Leads CJP to Withdraw Sept 5 Protest

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has withdrawn its call for a protest march scheduled for September 5 in Delhi. The decision came after the Centre assured the Supreme Court that it will not pursue cases filed against student protesters linked to the July 20 CJP protest in the national capital.

Taking note of the government's submission, the Supreme Court quashed all FIRs filed against protesters between July 20 and 25. The court directed that all cases registered against students in various states and union territories stand quashed.

The assurance was conveyed by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, who informed the court that the Centre, Delhi Police, and the states of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, and Maharashtra had filed applications to quash the FIRs. Mehta stated that no future FIRs would be registered in connection with the protest-related events from July 20 to July 25, honouring the commitment made to CJP leaders on July 25.

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das told the court that in light of the government's positive response and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon the assurances, the organisation deemed it appropriate to withdraw the call for the September 5 march. He thanked the court and both legal counsels for the decision.

The proposed march was to begin at India Gate and proceed towards the Delhi Police Headquarters. The organisation had earlier accused the government of breaching trust by delaying the withdrawal of FIRs against student protesters and failing to provide written assurance on commitments made during July 25 negotiations. Families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide and alleged victims of police action during the July protests were to lead the demonstration.
