Climate Change Pushes Champagne Harvest to Earliest Start on Record
Record heat and drought have forced the earliest champagne harvest ever, testing the industry's resilience and prompting adaptation.
In the Champagne region of northeastern France, the grape harvest has begun more than a week earlier than last year, marking the earliest start since records began in the early 20th century. The accelerated timeline is a direct consequence of climate change, with record heat and drought across Europe speeding up grape ripening and altering sugar content, which complicates the preservation of champagne's signature flavor and acidity.
The industry's governing body, the Champagne Committee, moved the official start date to August 12, a shift from last year's August 20. Some producers, like Vincent Finot in Montgueux, received special permission to begin even earlier, on August 6, after tests showed acidity levels dropping sharply. "I didn't dare wait any longer," he said, surprised by the earliness.
Winemakers are feeling the pressure. Benoit Velut, who runs a small vineyard in Montgueux, noted that there is no summer break for those in the trade. His father, Denis, recalled that harvests used to occur in late September or October, a time that was still cool. He expressed disbelief that anyone in the late 1990s could have predicted harvesting before mid-August.
This year's challenges extend beyond the heat. A spring frost destroyed about 30% of the crop, and subsequent drought has further reduced yields. Some growers report grape bunches weighing nearly 30% less than usual. To cope with the shortfall, producers are relying on reserve stocks, a system that allows them to reintroduce stored wines to compensate for lost harvests.
Agroclimatologist Serge Zaka notes that harvest dates across all French vineyards have moved up by an average of 21 days over the past 50 years, affecting the entire vine cycle. While vines are historically resilient, they will need to adapt to more frequent climate shocks. This could involve planting more robust grape varieties and using ground cover to retain moisture.
The changing conditions are also creating opportunities elsewhere. Southern England, with its chalky soil and cooler climate, now mirrors Champagne's past conditions, prompting French houses like Taittinger and Pommery to invest there. Meanwhile, traditionalists like Denis Velut acknowledge that the wine itself may evolve, potentially losing some of the light, ethereal character that defines champagne in favor of warmer, higher-alcohol styles.
