Couple arrested in Manipur for Chennai woman's murder, being brought to city

The Guduvanchery police have arrested a couple from Manipur in connection with the murder of a 38-year-old woman in Chennai, nearly a month after her dismembered body was discovered on a train. The accused, identified as Manik Uddin Laskar and Bhagabati Majhi, are being brought to Chennai after a transit warrant was obtained from a judicial magistrate in Jirbham district.
The case came to light on August 5 when the woman's body parts were found stuffed inside a trolley bag in a general compartment of the Tamil Nadu Express at Agra Cantonment. The Agra Railway Police launched an investigation, and a review of CCTV footage from Platform 4 at Chennai Central railway station showed a man and a woman boarding the train with a suspicious bag.
Investigators traced the couple's movements to a rented house on Masuthi Street in Guduvanchery. The victim was later identified as Hayathun Nisha, 38, a native of Odisha who worked at a private firm. Police also recovered additional body parts from a cooking vessel at the premises.
A special team formed by Tambaram City Police Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha traced the suspects to a remote and difficult-to-access area in Manipur. The team camped in the region for over a week, navigating heavy rain and limited mobility, before locating and arresting the couple on Saturday.
Senior officers stated that the motive for the murder will only be established after the suspects are brought to Tambaram and interrogated. The team is expected to reach Chennai by Sunday night.
