Quarry Slurry Spill Turns Cherupuzha Toxic in Kozhikode
A slurry tank burst at a granite quarry in Kozhikode has polluted the Cherupuzha river, affecting drinking water and bathing spots.
Residents along the banks of the Cherupuzha river in Kozhikode are facing a water crisis after a slurry tank at a nearby granite quarry and crusher unit reportedly burst, releasing a large volume of rock dust and waste into the waterway.
The incident occurred at Thottumukkam in the Kodiyathur grama panchayat a couple of days ago. The discharge has severely polluted the river, a major tributary of the Chaliyar, turning the water an unnatural colour and making it unusable for domestic purposes.
Local residents say the contamination has rendered several drinking water sources and bathing spots along both banks of the river unfit for use. Water drawn by local drinking water schemes from the river has also reportedly become unsafe.
The pollution has triggered strong protests in the area, with residents demanding immediate intervention by authorities and strict action against those responsible. They also noted that the Cherupuzha has witnessed similar contamination in the past due to waste flowing from granite quarries.
Officials from the Kodiyathur panchayat confirmed they have been alerted to the issue and have already contacted the quarry management, urging them to take preventive measures. An official stated that an inspection of the site is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, and that further action will be decided following the assessment.
