China's C919 Completes First International Commercial Flight to Mongolia
China's C919 aircraft landed in Ulaanbaatar on its first scheduled international passenger flight, a step in its global push.
China's domestically developed C919 passenger jet touched down at the new Ulaanbaatar airport in Mongolia on Wednesday, completing its first scheduled international commercial flight since entering service in 2023. The aircraft was welcomed with a traditional water salute, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
The C919, a single-aisle plane built by state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), is positioned as a rival to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. It has already served 57 routes connecting 25 Chinese cities, according to official data.
Beijing views the C919 as a symbol of technological progress and self-reliance, although the aircraft relies heavily on Western components. Analysts at Bank of America note that the C919 has 48 major suppliers from the United States, including GE, Honeywell, and Collins, alongside 26 from Europe and 14 from China.
The flight to Mongolia marks a step forward in China's efforts to expand the C919's international footprint, as the country seeks to challenge established players in the global aviation market.
